Should I Go to Uni or Get a Job? (AD)

Are you currently at a Sixth Form College, debating whether or not you should go to university or jump straight into a career? If so, you are not alone. Countless teenagers go through the same inner-turmoil and even many adults are confused about what direction they want their career to go. This is arguably one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever have to make, so there’s no wonder you’re feeling a little stressed out about it.
The most important thing to remember through it all is that it’s a decision that only you can make. Don’t be swayed by what your parents want you to do or what your older siblings have done, and don’t go to uni just because all of your friends are going; make the decision based on the direction you want your life to go. No one can argue you with your choice as long as you have a game plan in place.

Do your research and understand the pros and cons of going to university and whether or not it’s a suitable decision for you. Many specialist careers require a specific type of degree; otherwise you cannot hope to get a job in that field. Some jobs might request that you have a degree, but not necessarily in a particular subject. Other employers will be more interested in your work experience than your education. Essentially, it’s worth looking into the type of job you want to do to help you determine whether or not uni is the right choice.

If you’re unsure what you want to do, you could consider taking a year out to give you some time to make your decision. It’s never too late to go to university, so if you don’t think you’re ready yet then don’t rush it. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice from your teachers and other people you trust.
