I am obsessed with Virgin River, both the book series and the Netflix Original series! I am slowly making y way through the books, there is a lot of them and I plan on reading most of them in 2021. But today I am here to talk about the latest release, Return to Virgin River as it is my stop on the blog tour! Blurb
Struggling with grief after the death of her mother, successful author Kaylee Sloan needs a distraction, to come to terms with life and meet her looming deadline.
With Christmas approaching, Kaylee rents a cabin in Virgin River. She knows the isolation will help her writing and as she drives north through the mountains she immediately feels inspired. Until she arrives at a building that has just gone up in flames. Devastated, she heads to Jack’s Bar to plan her next steps. The local bar is the heart of the town and once she crosses the threshold, she’s surprised to be embraced by people who are more than willing to help a stranger in need.
Welcomed by those in Virgin River, Kaylee starts to see her life in a new light. And as she becomes more involved in the town and the people in it, especially local artist and dog trainer Landry Moore, Kaylee realises she may have found her peace. As Christmas approaches, Kaylee’s dread turns to wonder. Because there’s no better place to mend a broken heart than Virgin River.
My Review
With this being a story about grief, I was expecting it to be overwhelmingly sad but it is actually a very positive and uplifting story that not only covers that and a little romance but also touches on forgiveness and the importance of friendship. We follow Kaylee as she finds herself and her people in a new town in the year after her mother's death. I love how the Virgin River community plays into this story, everyone is so accepting of Kaylee and the way they help her is incredible. I went into this knowing there would be a romance and I loved seeing her relationship grow and transform with Landry. I was surprised there were some steamy scenes in this and they weren't fade to black! They have such a realistic and genuine relationship and it was so lovely to follow along with.
Other surprising things I found in this book were a lot of twists and plot points towards the end, there were some seeds planted at the beginning of the book and they went right over my head. But without giving spoilers, I thought what Kaylee did at the end of the book was so selfless but so perfect for her and the situation. This book is set from August until Christmas so now is a really great time to read it. I loved this book and it was so enjoyable to read, I flew through it and finished it within a couple of hours.
If you haven't read any of the books yet but wanted to start with this one, that isn't a problem! It may be the 19th book in the series (how incredible is that!) but I didn't have any issues at all. And if you've watched only seen the Netflix series, it's so nice to be able to put faces to names, I loved when Mel and Jack made appearances as they are two of my favourite characters in recent Netflix releases.
