True Crime Recommendations #1: Cult Documentaries

If you follow me online basically anywhere, you will know I do not shut up about Scientology. I am extremely passionate about the abuses from cults like Scientology and rather than keep trying to condense facts, I thought I would start a new series all about True Crime and start off with some documentaries about Cults that I highly recommend watching. True Crime Recommendations #1: Cult DocumentariesI can't not start with Scientology. The first documentary series I recommend to anybody who will listen to me is Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. Through three seasons it follows Leah and Mike Rinder and other former members sharing their experiences with Scientology. Mike was a top level executive in Scientology and he ran the Office of Special Affairs. Another Scientology documentary I highly recommend is Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief. This is also a book, written by Lawrence Wright.

Once you start watching cult documentaries you will notice how many make references to Scientology and it blows my mind that they are still classed as a religion but here we are. The Son of Sam: A Descent into Darkness Netflix series follows Maury Terry who becomes convinced the serial killer David Berkowitz did not act alone and deep dives into the murders, and a satanic cult.

In the news a lot last year was NXIVM which has quite a few similarities to Scientology but is known in the news as being a sex cult as they engaged in sex trafficking, the branding of women, forced labor and racketeering. This cult has some celebrities connections much like Scientology and there's even a connection to the Royal Family. There are two NXIVM docu-series I recommend and they are The Vow and Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult. The Vow will be back for a second season.

If you have a Discovery+ subscription and are looking for a cult docuseries to watch, Children Of The Cult is a must watch. However I will say, I have watched so much true crime and this series took me a while to get through because it broke me to watch. I felt sick a lot of the time watching this. Trigger warnings for all of the shows I have mentioned in this but this one specifically covers child sexual abuse, murder, suicide, and general abuse.

The Way Down: God, Greed and The Cult of Gwen Shamblin is a little less heavy than the others I have mentioned but no less shocking. It follows the founder of a diet program and The Remnant Fellowship, a new Christian group. There will be five episodes in total and the first three are out now. It ends on one shocking cliffhanger if you haven't read anything about Gwen.

Finally for a docuseries with culty vibes about an MLM, LuLaRich is an Amazon Original. This is a four part series that follows the unraveling of LuLaRoe.
