True Crime Recommendations #2: Catfishing & Conmen

I have been on a real true crime kick this year and I am loving it. Today I have a few podcasts and Netflix series to recommend and all of them have one thing in common, catfishing and conmen. I used to love watching the MTV show and that is a much lighter version then the content I have to share today. The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman

This mini series isn't exactly catfishing but I wanted to include it anyway because it's more along the lines of the guy catfishes them by pretending to be somebody he isn't which is essentially cat fishing. This is a three episode series and the episodes are under an hour each so it is a quick watch. This story is based in the UK as well and begins in 1993 and is still on going.

The Tinder Swindler

"A group of women who were the victims of a dating app based swindler join together in an attempt to hunt him down and recover the millions of dollars that were stolen from them."

I'm sure you have either seen this documentary or heard about Simon Leviev so I won't say too much about it. I have also already talked about this doc in another blog post recently. But this story is wild and it keeps on giving. As of three days ago (as of writing this) Simon has been sued by the real diamond family from the doc!

Sweet Bobby

"Kirat is a successful radio presenter. On Facebook she meets Bobby, a handsome cardiologist. He’s a catch. Soon, they get tangled up in a love affair full of lies and manipulation. Then... Kirat discovers a deception of almost unimaginable proportions.

From the makers of Finding Q, this is Sweet Bobby. A live investigation, in six parts, in search of one of the world's most sophisticated catfishers"

This is a six part podcast series that I binged in a day. It's well done and the story is WILD. I wish Kirat all of the best and I can't believe this went on over over ten years. This is one of the most extreme cases of catfishing I have ever heard about. I did guess successfully who the catfisher was before it was revealed and I loved how the podcast was produced. You get to hear from the real people, including the catfisher for a couple of seconds. I got goosebumps multiple times while listening.

Queen of the Con: The Irish Heiress

"Mair Smyth came into the life of reality TV producer Johnathan Walton as an angel, promising salvation and friendship in a time of need. And not just an everyday angel, a glamorous one—with a storied family in Ireland who is fighting her over a whopping $25 million inheritance. But one day, after trying to help Mair out of a legal “snafu,” Johnathan accidentally learns the truth about the woman who has become his best friend: she’s actually an international con artist who has scammed him and a slew of other victims out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, from Los Angeles to Belfast. As Johnathan uncovers con after con—involving BDSM sex rings, witchcraft, a phony cancer diagnosis, and the scamming of a Los Angeles politician—he and other victims band together to bring Mair Smyth to justice. But can they stop her? Or will she go free in a world where her next mark is just a friendly smile away.."

I listened to this podcast a while ago and the story isn't one I have easily forgotten. The podcast is ten episodes, including two bonus episodes and I thought it was well done. I was gripped every single week. You get to hear from the actual people involved like with Sweet Bobby.
